France's dense, centralised railway network is managed
by the Société Nationale des Chemins de
Fer (SNCF). From London, the Eurostar is probably the
most straightforward mode of transport: only 3 hours
from one city centre to the other (the Gare du Nord
in Paris, Waterloo in London). From Brussels, it takes
just 1h20 on the Thalys service to get to the French
capital. From Paris, TGV services operate to most major
towns and cities - reservation is essential. Corail
and TER (Regional Express) services make up the rest
of the network. There are a large number of cheap youth
fares available. The SNCF also offers a range of other
reductions for couples, groups or advance reservations.

territory are a monopoly of the SNCF: the bus provides
continuity with the SNCF where there are no trains:
the cost is the same as 2nd class by train. Information
in SNCF stations There are also many departmental and
regional lines, which are the cheapest form of transport:
information from the CDTs and Tourist Offices. The Eurolines
network is extensive, and links Paris with every other
European capital. OTU Voyage (the student travel agency)
is also worth knowing. In towns and cities, bus services
are usually extensive. Contact the local Tourist Office
for information.
